Tai Sunnanon officially takes the helm as Executive Director of ICA

After a rigorious and transparent search for a full-time Executive Director, the 18-member Board of Directors for Independent Cities Association selected their Interim Executive Director, Tai Sunnanon, to become its full-time Executive Director.

Since June 2017, Tai has been responsible for re-organizing the operations and infrastructure for ICA, while growing its membership base to nearly 40 cities, ensuring successful conferences and bringing in new business partners.

Tai’s track record speaks for itself. His 22-year career as a social entrepreneur, nonprofit CEO and Harvard Instructor have helped to elevate the brand and status of ICA. Previously, Tai founded several nonprofits, was an inscructor at leading universities and served his country as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Palau. In Spring 2019, he will be a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Tai speaks 7 languages and has won several national awards, including Presidential Scholar and U.S. Military Community Service Medallion. Tai completed his doctoral coursework at Harvard University, where he also earned his MPP and EdM degrees, and holds a BA from UCLA.


ICA is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, public benefit corporation created in 1960. It is made up of 38 member cities in the Southern California area. The organization focuses on public safety, education, legislative advocacy, intergovernmental relationships and other major issues that transcend the boundaries of its member cities. ICA holds two Annual Seminars bringing together city council members, other city officials and business partners for the purpose of collaboration, networking, and knowledge exchanging. The Winter Seminar (held in January) addresses public safety and the Summer Seminar (held in June) focuses on contemporary issues.
